Chief Justice Nominee Gertrude Torkornoo To Face Appointments Committee Today
Chief Justice nominee, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, is expected before the Appointments Committee of Parliament today (May 26) for vetting.
Nominated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in April 2023, Justice Torkornoo’s appointment aims to ensure a seamless transition following the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, on May 24.
Justice Torkornoo, if approved, will make history as the third female Chief Justice in Ghana, joining the ranks of Justices Georgina Theodora Wood and Sophia Akuffo.
President Akufo-Addo expressed the urgency of the appointment to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, urging swift facilitation of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s approval.
“It is my respectful hope that the approval by Parliament of Justice Torkornoo can proceed expeditiously to enable her to assume office as soon as practicable following the retirement of Chief Justice Anin-Yeboah,” parts of the letter addressed to Parliament, stated.
This call to action aims to prevent any gaps in the leadership of the judiciary resulting from Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah’s retirement.
