The Ghana Poultry Farmers Association estimates an upward adjustment in the price of chicken this festive season.
Poultry, initially selling at GH₵55 two weeks ago, now sells at GH₵70 on the market.
However, this current price is expected to inch up before Christmas.
President of the Ghana Poultry Farmers Association, Vincent Oppong Owusu Adjei, attributes the increasing cost to the expensive poultry feed and pharmaceutical products.
“As for Christmas, you must give Ghanaians fresh and healthy chicken, except the prices will go up.
“The layer, as at now, we’ve priced it at GH₵70 per bird. The broiler doesn’t have a fixed price because that one will be priced depending on the weight,” he said on JoyNews, monitored by The Ghana Report.
According to him, “If you look at the cost of production, I mean feed which was GH₵1500 per tonne, is now GH₵6,700. The percentage is too huge, and this is affecting the poultry industry.”
Poultry prices have seen a 100 per cent increment during the same period last year.
Last year, poultry sold at GH₵35 to GH₵40 before Christmas but sold at GH₵45 during the yuletide.
