“Charges were defective, evidence insufficient” – A-G

Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine has provided a detailed explanation for his decision to withdraw several high-profile cases against state officials, including Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison.

At a press briefing on February 12, 2025, Dr. Ayine stated that the charges against the accused were fundamentally flawed and, based on professional and ethical standards, there was no valid justification to proceed with the cases.

He emphasized that the evidence presented in these cases was insufficient to support a conviction.

Specifically, Dr. Ayine commented on the case involving Dr. Ato Forson, stating that while he wasn’t counsel on record for the case, he believed Forson had been targeted by a political witch hunt.

He further affirmed that no new evidence had been brought to light since he assumed office as Attorney-General to alter his professional stance.

Dr. Ayine also explained that some charges were based on defective filings, which were, in his view, against common sense.

Due to these factors, he concluded that continuing with the cases would be a waste of state resources and unnecessary.
