The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) is scheduled to meet with its national council today, Thursday, July 25, to decide whether to end its ongoing strike.

The prolonged strike is due to the government’s failure to implement the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) Arbitral Award Orders and some negotiated service conditions.

In an interview, the president of CETAG, Prince Obeng Himah, revealed that discussions between the association and the government have led to significant agreements.

According to the president, these agreements are seen as steps towards resolving the issues that led to the strike.

He emphasised that while progress has been made, a final decision regarding the strike will be determined after today’s national council meeting.

“The outcome of this meeting will be crucial in deciding whether the teachers will resume work or continue with the strike action, pending the full implementation of the agreed terms.

“We have had a series of discussions and made significant progress with a lot of proposals put on the table. We’re going to touch base with our members.

“What I can say for now is that we have made a lot of progress based on the proposals that have been put on the table,” the President of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana stated.

Meanwhile, CETAG has withdrawn all services, following the government’s directive to the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) on July 22 to withhold the salaries of all striking CETAG members for July 2024.

Responding to this directive, CETAG in a statement on Tuesday, July 23, explained that the association would scale up to stop all of its services following the directive from the Minister of Education.

“In an emergency meeting of National Council, July 23, the council members took a unanimous decision to withdraw all our services including attendance to meetings, congregation ceremonies and provision of academic counselling services as well as supervision of students in the halls of residence with immediate effect until further notice,” the statement read.
