Cedi@60: BoG engages over 250 pupils in currency education

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) on October 31, 2025, hosted over 250 pupils from five basic schools at the Bank Square in Accra as part of its ongoing Cedi@60 celebrations.

The event formed part of the Central Bank’s nationwide campaign to promote financial literacy and deepen public understanding of the Ghana Cedi’s heritage, value, and use.

The participating schools were Independence Avenue Basic School (1 & 2), St. George’s Anglican Basic School, Bishop Mixed Basic School, Accra Sempe School, and St. Barnabas Basic School.

During the engagement, officials from the Bank of Ghana took the pupils through an interactive session on the history and evolution of the Cedi, from its early beginnings to the current series in circulation.

The session also covered the security features of Ghana’s currency, helping the children identify genuine notes and coins while understanding why caring for the Cedi matters to the national economy.

The day’s activities were not all about lectures. Pupils also participated in fun games, quizzes, and educational exercises focused on money management, saving culture, and responsible spending. The games were designed to make financial education relatable and enjoyable for young learners.

Speaking at the event, BoG Governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama encouraged the pupils to take their studies seriously, emphasising they are the country’s future.

He shared words of wisdom with the pupils, alongside his deputies, Dr. Zakari Mumuni and Mrs. Matilda Asante-Asiedu.

He also emphasized that the initiative aligns with the central bank’s commitment to promoting financial literacy at the foundational level.

He further noted that instilling these values in children helps build a generation of financially aware citizens who appreciate the importance of the Cedi as a symbol of Ghana’s independence and economic stability.

The Cedi@60 celebration commemorates six decades since Ghana introduced its own national currency in 1965, replacing the British pound and solidifying the country’s financial sovereignty.

As part of the celebrations, the Bank of Ghana has lined up several activities throughout the year to highlight the Cedi’s contribution to Ghana’s economic journey and to encourage proper handling of the currency among the public.

The day ended with music, lunch, and smiles all around — a true celebration of learning, legacy, and national pride
