Five accused persons have been remanded in police custody in connection to the money stolen from the former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah.

The Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday, August 8, also granted GH¢1 million bail with three sureties each to two of the accused, who are nursing mothers.

Two house helps of the former minister and three others were earlier arrested for allegedly stealing $1 million, €300,000, a substantial amount of Ghana cedis at the former minister’s residence.

Two additional suspects were later arrested, bringing the number to seven.

According to the prosecution, the culprits stole the items between July and October 2022.

They allegedly used the stolen funds to finance various purchases, including renting a three-bedroom apartment and a store in Tamale, buying vehicles, and funding other personal expenses.

Two of the accused—18-year-old Patience Botwe and 30-year-old Sarah Agyei, have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime and five counts of stealing, while three others have been charged with dishonestly receiving the alleged stolen money.

The initial reports sparked various reactions from the public, leading to the resignation of the former minister.

Following her resignation, the Office of the Special Prosecutor arrested her over corruption and corruption-related offences.
