Former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources Cecilia Abena Dapaah has been granted bail by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

She was granted bail with surety in the evening of Monday, July 24, after being arrested earlier in the day.

The OSP had conducted searches at both her official residence in Cantonments and her private home in Abelemkpe.

The searches were related to investigations into corruption and corruption-related offences over the alleged million-dollar cash theft by housekeepers, which led to her resignation on Saturday, July 22.

According to sources, her relatives have also been questioned by officials of the OSP.

Prior to the arrest, the OSP said they had received hundreds of petitions to investigate Madam Cecilia Dapaah.

Two house helps of the former minister and three others are currently facing charges before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing an amount of $1 million, €300,000, a substantial amount of Ghana cedis and other valuables, including jewellery and expensive perfumes at the former minister’s residence.

According to the prosecution, the culprits stole the items between July and October 2022.

The reports sparked various reactions from the public, with many calling for a probe into the source of wealth of the former minister.

Less than 48 hours after the issue went viral, she tendered her resignation letter to President Nana Akufo-Addo.

According to her, she does not want the case “to become a preoccupation of government and a hindrance to the work of government at such a crucial time”.
