Cease running unauthorised campuses by September 30 – GTEC orders universities

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has asked public universities to discontinue operating unauthorised campuses by September 30, 2023.

Professor Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, the Deputy Director General of GTEC, claims that these universities have additional campuses spread across the country that are unfit for purpose.

According to him, the commission has refused to sanction these campuses due to their locations.

He said some are using basic and senior high schools or churches as centres, which he described as unacceptable and illegal.

“We have written to them to cease the running of such centres by September 30. Some of them have written to us asking for dialogue and conversation, which we do not have any problem with.

“At the end of the day, what we are looking for is that we want things to be done and done properly,” Professor Jinapor said.

Professor Jinapor added that GTEC is working with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to issue a decree to all Basic and Senior High school administrators ordering them to stop giving out their facilities as centres for such universities.

In July 2023, he also cautioned tertiary students against patronizing unaccredited programmes in some universities.

The Deputy Director General said this will ensure quality in the educational system.
