Catholic Church protesters petition Akufo-Addo to end galamsey
The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, in collaboration with other Catholic organizations, staged an environmental prayer protest walk today [October 10] to raise awareness about the devastating impact of illegal mining (galamsey).
This peaceful demonstration was aimed at pushing the government to declare a state of emergency regarding mining activities, particularly near water bodies, river buffers, and forest reserves, and also highlight the destructive effects of galamsey on the environment.
In addition, they called for swift and decisive measures to curb environmental degradation and promote eco-friendly practices for a livable future.
The event began with a Service of Preparation at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Adabraka, followed by a walk through the principal streets of the capital, concluding at the Christ the King Parish in Cantonments.
Participants carried placards advocating for an end to galamsey, while police ensured a peaceful procession.
One of the leaders, Rev. Father Godwin Fiawoyi, emphasized the importance of resilience in protecting Ghana’s natural resources and prayed for divine intervention in the fight against environmental degradation.
The Catholic Church invited all Ghanaians, regardless of faith or affiliation, to join this critical cause.
Together, they demanded immediate action to stop galamsey, protect the environment, and restore Ghana’s ecosystems.
To conclude the prayer walk, a petition was presented to President Akufo-Addo, urging prompt action to address the crisis.
The police were present to guide the peaceful walk.
