Can Amoakohene succeed as Ashanti Regional Minister? Towfik Mohammed writes

On January 14, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama appointed Dr. Frank Amoakohene as the Ashanti Regional Minister designate.

Dr. Amoakohene’s appointment has generated significant excitement among the youth and NDC supporters.

His background as a medical professional, youth leader, and experienced politician suggests he may be well-equipped to handle the challenges of the Ashanti Region.

The Ashanti Region’s complexity and diversity, with 43 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, will indeed pose a challenge for Dr. Amoakohene. Moreover, the region is grappling with numerous stalled projects, including:

Central Market face 2
Krofrom Market
Ashanti Regional Hospital at Sewua
Afari Military Hospital
Baby and Mother unit block at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
Boankra Inland Port Project
Accra-Kumasi highway dualisation.

These stalled projects not only hinder development but also affect the livelihoods of residents. As the new Regional Minister, Dr. Amoakohene will need to prioritize completing these projects, addressing the underlying causes of the delays, and ensuring efficient allocation of resources.

To succeed, he may need to:

– Engage with stakeholders, including local authorities, contractors, and community leaders
– Conduct thorough assessments of each project’s status and challenges
– Develop strategic plans to revitalize and complete the projects
– Foster collaboration with relevant ministries, agencies, and development partners to secure funding and technical support

By tackling these stalled projects, Dr. Amoakohene can demonstrate his commitment to the region’s development and improve the lives of its residents.

Dr. Amoakohene, your predecessor at certain point, failed to balance regional needs and party interest. Also many criticise him of failing to managing his expectations and criticism.

The former Ashanti Regional Minister failed to address the developmental needs of the people such as infrastructure deficits, poverty, and inequality within the region.

However, as you assume office, build strong relationships with stakeholders. Foster open communication channels with local authorities, traditional leaders, and community groups to ensure that their needs and concerns are addressed.

Again, prioritize regional development. Focus on initiatives that promote economic growth, improve infrastructure, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents in the Ashanti Region.
Stay Accountable and Transparent Regularly update the public on his administration’s progress, challenges, and plans, and be responsive to criticism and feedback.

By adopting these strategies, Dr. Amoakohene can build on the foundation laid by his predecessor and make meaningful progress in addressing the challenges facing the Ashanti Region.

As the former NDC parliamentary candidate for Mampong Constituency and current Ashanti Regional Secretary for NDC, Dr. Amoakohene has demonstrated his commitment to public service and governance. His experience in healthcare, coupled with his MBA from the Accra Business School, may serve him well in addressing the region’s development needs.
