Cameroon records first confirmed case of coronavirus

Cameroon has recorded its first confirmed case of coronavirus.

The country’s health authorities detected the virus in a 58-year-old French national who arrived in Yaounde on February 24, 2020.

Cameroon’s Minister of Public Health, Dr. Manaouda Malachie, announced the arrival of the deadly coronavirus, otherwise known as Convid-19, in the country.

According to the health minister, the victim was placed in solitary confinement in a medical center in the city.

Cameroon is the seventh African country to have recorded the disease after Nigeria, Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt.

In Ghana, all 42 suspected cases have tested negative. The Ghana Health Service, and the Ministry of Health, have given assurances of their preparedness and readiness to handle the virus should there be a confirmed case.

The Minister of Health, Kweku Agyemang Manu, revealed, during a press briefing, that the ministry had set up some quarantine centers, but refused to disclose the locations of these confinement centers.

Meanwhile, the Vatican has reported its first case of coronavirus on Friday, days after Pope Francis tested negative for the virus.

The discovery takes the epidemic to the city-state surrounded by Italy, which has confirmed over 3,800 cases and 148 deaths.

Italy reported 41 new deaths from the coronavirus on Wednesday, its highest single-day total to date, bringing the number of fatalities in Europe’s most affected country to 148.

The number of cases also jumped by a new high of 769, reaching 3,858 over the past two weeks.

The latest figures mean Italy has the second-most deaths behind China, where the new virus was first detected at the end of last year.
