The National Labour Commission (NLC) has announced that the Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) should call off its strike and return to work with immediate effect.

The decision to call off the strike comes after a meeting mediated by the NLC between TUTAG and other stakeholders in the employment industry.

In a ruling, signed by the Deputy Chairperson, Mrs. Rose Karikari Anang implored the government to pay TUTAG members who qualify for electricity, rent, car maintenance and security allowances before the end of the year.

“The responsibility, entertainment, and fuel allowances shall be paid to deserving office holders in December 2019,” extracts of the release stated.

Earlier TUTAG members had declared a sit-down strike from October 7, 2019, over poor conditions of service suggesting that following the conversion of Polytechnics to Technical Universities, little has been done to properly upgrade them to reflect current status.

The Association also indicated that there were anomalies in the migration onto the Public Service Salary Structure as some lecturers received only half of their salaries last month while others did not even get paid.

In light of the above strike action, the Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) also joined the industrial action, demanding full benefits of migration onto the public universities’ salary structure.

The three-week continuous industrial action by TUTAG and the recent indefinite strike also declared by the administrators brought technical education across the country to a standstill.

Students in some of the technical universities have also held various protests to impress upon the government to meet their teachers’ demands and ensure that they return to class to enable academic work to resume.

After series of deliberations the National Labour Commission has asked TUTAG members to resume work immediately.
