Call Electrochem management to order – Toflokpo residents give govt a 14-day ultimatum
Residents of Toflokpo, near Sege in the Greater Accra Region, have issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government to call the management of Electrochem Ghana Limited to order.
According to the enraged residents, they will take the law into their own hands if the government fails to address their grievances.
This comes after a clash between the residents and staff of Electrochem on Monday, November 6, 2023, resulted in the death of a 47-year-old man.
Nene Mayilo Dadebom II, chief of Toflokpo, had alleged that the company was using land guards to deny them access to mine in the Songhor Lagoon, which has been their main source of livelihood for years.
Before the incident, there had been tensions between the two parties over the activities of the salt mining company in the Songhor Lagoon.
Following the incident, the people of Toflokpo said they are living in fear and have called on the government to intervene in the concession boundary dispute or the issue will escalate.
Meanwhile, the management of Electrochem has denied any involvement in the incident that led to the death of the 47-year-old man.
In a statement, the company said they are waiting on the outcome of the police investigation to issue detailed information on the said incident.
