The Controller and Accountant General Department (CAGD) has suspended the January 2026 salaries of 2,563 government workers after a nationwide headcount uncovered gaps in staff verification.

In a statement issued on Friday, January 30, 2026, and signed by Cephas Neosoo, Head of Public Relations, the department said salary payments for January had been processed for the majority of workers on the national payroll.

The affected group represents staff whose records raised concerns following the 2025 headcount exercise carried out across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.

According to the department, the decision to withhold the salaries was taken on the advice of the Auditor General.

The workers involved reportedly did not take part in the headcount, which was designed to confirm the legitimacy and current status of public sector employees.

The department, however, says the situation can be resolved. Affected staff have been asked to contact the Ghana Audit Service to verify their employment details and complete the required clearance process.

Once this is done, their salaries can be restored.

The Controller and Accountant General Department stressed that the move is part of broader efforts to strengthen transparency and accountability in public financial management.
