Fifteen tenants at Winneba in the Efutu Municipality of the Central Region have escaped death as a three storey-building collapsed on them.
The Winneba Municipal Fire Service Commander, DO2 Kwesi Hugues, disclosed that they had a call from some residents that a three-storey building had collapsed, so they quickly rushed to the scene.
DO2 Hugues indicated that all the tenants had been rescued when they arrived, but their properties were destroyed.
A thorough investigation by the fire officers revealed that the three-storey building was built in a waterlogged area, and the owner had failed to use quality building materials for the apartments.
DO2 Hugues urged Ghanaians to buy land during the rainy season to assess the ground thoroughly.
He also advised tenants to do visibility studies before renting any house.
In May 2023 alone, there were more than six reports of building collapses nationwide.
On May 5, one person was confirmed dead after being trapped under rubble following the collapse of a three-storey building at Nanakrom in the Adentan Municipality in Accra.
Seven construction workers were also severely injured after a church building collapsed at Old Bortianor in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region on May 9, 2023.
Again on May 23, 2023, a five-year-old girl lost her life after a building collapsed on her during a downpour at Ada Magazine in the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region.
