Burger highlife legend George Darko has passed on. He reportedly died on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.
The cause of his death is currently unknown.
George Darko rose to fame in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s with his popular songs such as ‘Akoo Te brofo’, ‘Prempremsiwaa’, and ‘Moni Palava’.
These songs remain among the most timeless highlife tracks in Ghana’s music scene. George Darko was known for his guitar skills, vocal abilities, and songwriting skills.
Additionally, he was well-versed in traditional dancing and drumming. George Darko’s first solo cassette, titled ‘The Reborn Avengers’, was renowned for its unique guitar beats. He also held the title of Tufuhene of Akropong and bore the stool name Nana Apem Darko I.
Later, he settled in Germany and helped to form the Bus Stop Band. By their third album, he became the group’s lead vocalist. Even after the band dissolved in 1988, he continued to perform as a soloist.
His demise comes shortly after the loss of another legendary highlife musician, Kwabena Kwakye Kabobo, popularly known in the entertainment industry as K.K Kabobo, who passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024.
K.K Kabobo had been battling liver disease before his death at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).
K.K. Kabobo established his first band, Explosive Jets, in 1978.
In 1981, he dropped his first album, which had the smash hit ‘Nyatse Nyatse Girl’.
In 1992, his song ‘Onyame Ehuwo’ was declared the song of the year and had the highest number of records sold in Ghana that same year, which made him more famous.
