One of the senior police officers implicated in the Inspector General of Police (IGP) leaked tape saga, Superintendent George Asare, has stated that he has no direct relations with former NPP Regional Chairman Bugri Naabu.
Superintendent Asare said the only connection and encounter he has had with the NPP politician was because of Bugri Naabu’s son, whom he says is his spiritual father.
“I’ve had three different conversations with Bugri Naabu through his son, who happens to be my friend and spiritual father. The first time I met him was when his son, prophet Emmanuel Teye Bugri Naabu, took me to his office that he was going to say hello to his father,” he recounted when he appeared before Parliament’s ad-hoc committee tasked to probe the leaked tape.
“So, it was my friend who introduced him [Bugri Naabu] to me, and he mostly prays for me on the phone. I know he has a church, but I have never been there before. Ever since I came into contact with him, I have seen changes. He has given me some directions, and they have worked,” he revealed on Monday, September 4.
He denied arranging a meeting between the trio at the Upper West Region, as previously submitted by Bugri Naabu in his evidence to the committee on the first day of proceedings.
Superintendent Asare said the meeting between himself [Asare], Bugri Naabu, and Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah, captured on the leaked tape, took place at the office of Daniel Bugri Naabu at Osu in Accra.
He insists it was Bugri Naabu who called him to his office for the said meeting.
Superintendent Asare, together with COP George Alex Mensah, Superintendent Emmanuel Gyebi and Mr Naabu, were implicated in the alleged tape.
They were captured in a conversation ostensibly plotting to remove the current IGP Dr George Akuffo Dampare before the 2024 general elections.
Though Mr Naabu confirmed the content of the tape, Superintendent Asare said Bugri Naabu was merely inventing stories against him.
The committee was set up by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to investigate the authenticity of the leaked tape.
