Buduburam demolition: Liberians convert basic school into market
Some Liberians who have taken refuge at the Buduburam Point Basic School after they were displaced during a demolition at Buduburam have turned the school into a market square.
People who had taken refuge on the school premises could be seen engaging in all kinds of selling and buying; others were busily pounding fufu and cooking in the corridors of the school compound.
The Traditional Council previously warned that the Budumburam camp’s Zone E would soon be demolished to make room for a market that would help merchants impacted by the Kasoa-Winneba Highway expansion.
The council claimed that the commerce along the highway was impeding the work of contractors.
It followed through with its warning, demolishing numerous structures at the Liberia Camp.
Some impacted community members, however, blamed the council for the demolition’s extension beyond the originally designated zones, claiming surprise at the operation.
“The things happening in this town are not good for us. I am tired of burying dead bodies. Some are currently at Winneba Morgue, and I don’t even know them. Even during the demolition, some dead bodies and skeletons were found, but because of how decomposed the bodies were, we had to rebury them. All these have destroyed the name of Buduburam,” he lamented.
The demolition exercise was halted after the Central Regional Security Council visited the camp.
Nana Kojo Essel II said that criminals had tarnished the name of Gomoa Buduburam due to continuous killings.
