Broadcasting bill will be passed before parliament dissolves — Bawumia assures
The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has promised to ensure the passage of the Broadcasting Bill before the 8th Parliament dissolves.
Addressing journalists on Sunday, August 25, 2024, in Accra, Dr. Bawumia stressed the government’s commitment to improving the media.
“In line with our philosophy and reaffirming our commitment to upholding the fundamental rights to free speech and media freedoms and expanding the frontiers of individual rights, we will pass and fully implement the Broadcasting Bill before the final session of Parliament this year to better safeguard media freedoms and pluralism”.
“We will further resource the Media Capacity Enhancement Programme to continue enhancing the knowledge and skills of journalists,” Dr. Bawumia further assured.
Meanwhile, Dr. Bawumia has also assured that the NPP-led government would continue to collaborate closely with the media, emphasizing a commitment to upholding media freedom if elected in the 2024 general elections.
“The NPP views the media as a crucial partner in national development”.
“In our quest to expand the frontiers of democratic governance in Ghana, it was thus the NPP under former President J. A Kufuor that repealed the criminal libel law for the media to function fully. The NPP will continue to partner with the media and ensure media freedom.
“We’re partners with you and the partnership I will continue to keep, as the new leader of the NPP. We’re committed to deepening media freedom,” he noted at the meeting.
