Broadcast graphic images of COVID-19 patients to cause change – Prof. Aning

A Security expert, Professor Kwesi Aning, says the government should consider broadcasting graphic images of COVID-19 patients on TV to cause an attitudinal change among Ghanaians.

The Head of the Department of Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Accra laments the lack of seriousness attached to the disease which has so far killed 66 people in the country.

“If we add the law [and] graphic imagery of what the ventilator does to you and how you’ll feel when you’re on are on it, people will start protecting themselves,” he told Accra based Starr FM.

He believes more stringent steps need to be taken, including arresting persons who flout the COVID-19 directives to curtail the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has painted a gloomy picture of the country’s health system warning, of an imminent collapse due to the rising cases of coronavirus.

A medical doctor and a member of Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr. Sebastian Sandaare, accuses the government of gagging technical persons on the frontline from speaking freely to the precarious situation the country faces.

He wants the government to dissolve its COVID-19 team, arguing it is partisan. Dr. Sandaare says President Nana Akufo-Addo must constitute a new team to involve non-party members to help in the fight against COVID-19.

Ghana recorded 339 new coronavirus cases, bringing its total case count to 12,929 on June 18, 2020.

Out of this, 4,468 persons have fully recovered while 66 others have died from the virus.

According to the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Four persons infected with Covid-19 are in critical condition and are on ventilators while 14 others are critically ill.

339 infections push Ghana’s caseload close to 13,000
