AFCON 2023Q: Iñaki Williams withdraws from Black Stars squad ahead of Madagascar clash

Black Stars striker, Inaki Williams has pulled out of Ghana’s squad ahead of the upcoming clash against Madagascar in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

In a statement from the player on Monday, June 5, he said he is unable to play for the national team due to an injury.

“Since a few weeks, I’ve been playing with pain in my right knee. I decided to play until the end of the season, but after having spoken to the medical services, we’ve decided to stop and solve the problem to be 100% for the preseason.

“This wasn’t an easy decision to make because I won’t be able to be with my national team, Ghana the next meeting,” Inaki Williams announced.

“I want to say that I am fully committed and I will come back with the Black Stars if the coach deems it appropriate next calls.

“Thank you for your support,” He added.

The new development has forced Black Stars Head Coach Chris Hughton to make a last-minute change to the squad calling upon Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer to fill the void left by Williams.

The Hamburger SV winger has scored 8 goals and provided one assist in 31 games in the German Bundesliga 2.

Königsdörffer will join the squad in Accra when they commence camping on June 12 ahead of the qualifier.

The Black Stars will travel to Madagascar for the match which has been scheduled for June 18, 2023.

A win for the Black Stars in the game could secure qualification for Ghana to play at the Afcon tournament scheduled to be staged in Ivory Coast.
