Mothers of five persons alleged to be land guards shot by the police at Bortianor on June 8, 2023, have rained curses on the killers.

Residents of Bortianor clad themselves in red and black to protest the police’s action of killing five of their natives.

One of the mothers who lost two of her sons in the shooting incident during the protest moved a few meters away from the crowd to a small gutter where she poured some schnapps and cracked unboiled eggs whiles invoking curses on the killers.

Two days after the shooting incident, the police released a statement explaining how the deceased including those who managed to escape, initiated an attack on the police by shooting at the officers on operation.

“On June 8th, the police conducted an operation targeting criminal elements involved in robberies and land guard activities. These individuals had been terrorizing residents and land owners and nearby communities”.

“Upon spotting the approaching police team, the suspects opened fire from their hideout, prompting the police to return fire. As a result, five of the suspects were injured and later pronounced dead at the hospital. The remaining suspects fled the scene and are still on the run”, excerpts of the police statement highlighted.

Meanwhile, traditional leaders, family members, and some residents of Bortianor are claiming the deceased are not land guards as the law enforcement agency is saying.

The affected families later held a press conference over the incident and discussed possible ways to seek justice for their sons.

It will be recalled that a few days after the incident, Parliament also set up a committee to probe the circumstances leading to the death of the men.

Traditional Council members of the area however said the parliamentary committee has failed them as no person has visited the area to assess or make any inquiry on the shooting case.

The traditional leaders have appealed to the government to task an independent body to investigate the issue to ensure that the killers face the law.
