Bortianor: BPS Demands Immediate Probe Into Police-Land Guards Clash Leading To 5 Deaths
The Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) is calling for an “immediate” and “independent” investigation into a clash between the Police and some suspected land guards leading to the death of five of the land guards at Bortianor in the Ga South Municipal District of the Greater Accra Region on Thursday, June 8, 2023.
A release from the police said the suspects had been terrorizing residents and landowners in Bortianor and nearby communities.
But the Bureau of Public Safety in a statement signed by Executive Director Nana Yaw Akwada said sometimes suspected victims in such cases could be innocent.
The Bureau, therefore, urged the Police to commence an immediate and independent investigation into the matter.
“With great distress, we acknowledge the possibility that the five individuals may have fallen victim to what appears to be an unjustified use of force,” it said.
“This is deeply troubling and goes against our constitution’s justice and fair treatment principles.”
It said a thorough investigation not only will restore the trust and confidence of the public in law but also “shed light on the truth and enable necessary actions to be taken to prevent the further recurrence of such distressing events”.
Meanwhile, the police are calling on the public, particularly residents of Bortianor, to be on the lookout and “promptly report any individuals with gunshot wounds who may be seeking medical treatment”.
“Your cooperation will assist the police in taking immediate action.”
