The decomposing body of a young man has been found in an abandoned galamsey pit near the River Brim at Akyem Wenchi in the Eastern region.
The deceased, known as Akoshi, was from Accra but lived in Akyem Asene in the Asene Manso Akroso district.
According to reports, he had gone to the pit after work to wash himself when he fell inside.
Some residents said they heard him yelling for help but could not find anyone when they went to the pit.
He is believed to have drowned for three days before the body was discovered.
According to a colleague at the Galamsey site, Akoshi drowned on his third day at work.
Due to the state in which the body was found, he was buried in a nearby village around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 11, 2024, the same day he was found.
Uncovered abandoned pits scattered around areas where illegal mining is rampant have claimed numerous lives.
Information gathered revealed that both girls were trapped under the pit for hours before some community members eventually found their bodies.
In another incident, a 14-year-old JHS1 student also died after an uncovered galamsey pit caved in at Besiase in the Kwawu West municipality of the Eastern Region.
This came two weeks after a 25-year-old man was also killed in a galamsey pit in the same area.
