Dambai police in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region have arrested the owner of the boat involved in an accident on the Oti River on Wednesday, June 12, 2024.
The boat accident resulted in the death of three persons; a man, a woman and a child.
Seven others were rescued after a thorough search by the Navy, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), police, and residents.
The boat, which carried 11 persons from Dambai, was heading towards Njari, a farming and fishing community in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region, when the unfortunate incident occurred.

The Assembly Member for the Dambai Lakeside electoral area, Emmanuel Atali, who confirmed this latest update, said the boat owner had been arrested while investigations into the matter continue.
“We are still looking for the dead body, but the police have arrested the boat operator, who was driving the boat when the incident happened.
“As I am speaking now, people are still looking for the dead body. They have to let him [the boat operator] write his statement because he is the one who knows where the accident happened”.
He added that the seven rescued are recovering.
“All the people that were rescued are now recovering. All of them are in good condition”.
Meanwhile, NADMO has cautioned boat owners never to overload passengers in their boats to curtail unforeseen dangers.
