Two patients are dead as a result of a protracted power outage at Chereponi District Hospital in the North East Region.
The two-week outage has also disrupted medical services in the facility.
According to the health workers at the hospital, the situation has brought operations to a standstill.
“The light has caused a lot of problems in our lives. Just three days ago, we lost two people due to the power outage and there is some CS (Caesarean Section) too, they are supposed to be done but because of the light issue, they can’t carry on those things.
“So we appeal to the government that they should do something about it. And we, the health workers too, don’t feel comfortable here because how to charge our phones is very difficult and our food and everything has been stored. So we appealed to the government to do something about it,” one of the staff told the media.
They have called on the relevant authorities to intervene to help restore power at the Chereponi hospital.
NEDCo disconnected the power supply to the facility for the second time in a month due to its failure to settle an outstanding electricity bill of over four million Ghana cedis.
According to the management, the babies died due to the inability of the hospital to test for compatible blood to transfuse to the babies.
Dr Gbeadese Ahmed, the head of communications and clinical coordinator of the hospital, while speaking in a radio interview added that three other babies were also in critical condition.
“From the very first time they disconnected us, we lost a baby and the second time we lost another. As we speak, there is another one in critical condition and the reason is that we couldn’t transfuse [blood to] them. It looks like almost every day we are going to have a problem to deal with,” he said.
He said the hospital also suspended deliveries due to the same challenge.
