Women of colour and women who dare to enter the ‘male dominated’ field of politics are the most abused persons on the world wide web, a research has revealed.

Chief Executive Officer for Glitch, Seyi Akiwowo, at a presentation to some Members of Parliament highlighted how much of a threat the existing situation poses for all.

According to her, the research suggests women are more likely to be harassed online than men adding that the abuse is even worse for black women and women in politics.

“Women globally are 27 times more likely to be harassed online than men. Research has shown this is even worse for black women and women in politics. This is a threat to gender equality, democratic engagement and democracies around the world,” she emphasized.

She reiterated the need to create an opportunity for all women irrespective of their background or color to discuss issues of interest pertaining to their careers.

“Women must be given equal opportunities to bring to bear their political leadership skills and experience,” she added.

The Chief Executive Officer for Glitch said these at a two day conference organised by Members of Parliament (MPs) in partnership with the Commonwealth to support an all-inclusive society for women.

The rationale for the conference is geared towards supporting inclusive democratic practices that ensure women, young people, persons with disabilities and other under-represented groups are engaged in government decision making.

Glitch is a not-for-profit organisation determined to end online abuse through education, campaigns and advocacy.
