Black Stars coach CK Akonnor set to adopt captaincy rotation

The head coach of the Black Stars, CK Akonnor, is considering the rotation of the captain’s armband of the team.

The coach hinted the new development during an interview with Accra-based Happy FM.

“Sometimes this captaincy issue comes as a result of poor communication from management members or certain people trying to push their own agenda.

“Looking at our current situation, I will propose we rotate the captain’s armband and also a general captain appointed to speak on behalf of the players,” he said.

“Brazil and other countries have made it work, so we can also emulate them. We should be careful or else this captaincy row can affect the national team for years to come,” he said.

This comes in the wake of controversies surrounding captain selections in the past, for instance, the team’s painful defeat in 92 at the AFCON finals has been attributed to a captaincy related issue, the unavailability of then captain Abedi Ayew due to suspension, saw defender Tony Baffoe being awarded the armband ahead of deputy captain Tony Yeboah.

The Black Stars leadership is currently held by Andre Ayew who took over after skipper Asamoah Gyan. He was stripped off the armband few weeks ahead of last year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Gyan, who was unhappy with the decision, announced his retirement from international duty and would only rescind his decision following a plea by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

However, the 34-year-old was reduced to a peripheral figure at the tournament amid speculation of bad blood between him and the coach due to the captaincy issue as Ghana were eliminated in the Round of 16.
