Black Meteors head coach Ibrahim Tanko has promised to beef up his squad ahead of the upcoming U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament to be held in Morocco.
He made this known after the team on Tuesday secured a 2-1 aggregate win over Algeria to book a place in the tournament which also serves as a qualifier for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
Currently, Black Stars duo Mohammed Kudus and Kamaldeen Sulemana are eligible to play for the side but coach Tanko has ruled out Kudus.
Tanko who doubles as coach of Accra Lions disclosed that although Kudus cannot be part of the squad, others quality players are under the watch of the technical team and will be looking forward to inviting them to strengthen the side.
“I think Kudus cannot play in U-23 AFCON but we are looking at inviting good and quality players to come and help us,” he said after the game.
“If only it’s a FIFA date. I think it’s the end of the season so we will have more of them.”
This year’s U23 Africa Cup of Nations will be the 4th edition of the quadrennial African international football tournament, which will be hosted by Morocco between June 24 and July 8, 2023.
The top 3 teams of this edition of the tournament will qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympic men’s football tournament in Paris.
The 4th-placed team will play against an Asian opposition in a playoff to decide the final slot at the Olympics in Paris next year.
Black Meteors are chasing qualification to the Olympic Games for the first time since their last participation in 2004.
