‘Bishop’ arrested over alleged child trafficking in Uganda

Police in Nansana, Wakiso district are holding a self-proclaimed Bishop for allegedly trafficking 15 children between five to seven years.

The Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, says the suspect who calls himself a bishop was picked up from Kabumbi road in Nansana with the children.

Owoyesigyire says that although the suspect claims to have picked the children from Kasese to take them for treatment in Kampala, he lacks clear documents detailing how he got the children.

The suspect is being held on tentative charges of child trafficking.

Owoyesigyire says the children have been taken to probation police so that they can be handed over to a recognized child care centers, as police searches for their parents. .

A similar incident was registered last month when a driver, identified as Musa Lwanga, was arrested for abducting 16 school children at Bujuuko along Kampala- Mityana highway.

Lwanga’s arrest came after Peter Ndegeya, the head teacher of St Peter’s Katulo Primary School in Mpigi reported a case of abduction involving a Hiace motor vehicle UAU 260L.

Police dispatched a team of detectives commanded by OC station Bujuuko, which managed to intercept Lwanga together with the 16 children.

In his statement, Lwanga claimed that he was taking the children for circumcision after being promised Shillings 50,000 for each child.

The victims have since been reunited with their parents.
