BetPawa to invest GHghs7 million in Ghana’s elite football competitions

BetPawa, has announced plans to invest a minimum of GH¢7 million into elite men’s and women’s football competitions in Ghana.

Ntoudi Mouyelo, managing director of Mchezo Limited, operators of BetPawa, revealed this commitment at a press conference held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

The investment will be channeled through the “locker room bonus,” a support package initially designed to reward players in the Ghana Premier League, which will now also extend to cover the Women’s FA Cup. In its inaugural season (2022/23), GH¢600,000 was distributed to approximately 4,000 players from 17 out of the 18 participating teams, with Asante Kotoko being the only club not to benefit due to their decision not to participate.

Last season, BetPawa increased the locker room bonus from GH¢150 to GH¢400, resulting in a total payout of GH¢1.3 million to around 3,000 players. For the current season, the bonus will also include three members of each team’s coaching or technical staff. Teams will have the discretion to select which coaching staff members receive bonuses for each match.

“We expect to pay at least 3,500 players by the end of the season, which amounts to GH¢1.4 million. Over the next five seasons, we anticipate investing GH¢7 million across both the men’s and women’s divisions,” Mouyelo stated during the press conference.

The locker room bonus was introduced as an incentive for Premier League players to win matches and is awarded to all players listed on the match day roster for games they win.

This initiative is expected to significantly enhance player motivation and overall performance in Ghana’s football leagues.
