The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has announced the conviction and sentencing of two men involved in a violent robbery that shocked communities near Obuasi.
Francis Oppong, also known as Kwame Abuu, and Francis Nyamekye, also known as Amearo, were found guilty at the Bekwai Circuit Court for their roles in a December 2023 robbery targeting a small-scale miner in Kyekyewere.
After a full trial, Oppong received 15 years imprisonment with hard labour, while Nyamekye was sentenced to 25 years with hard labour. Both sentences are to be served at the Kumasi Central Prison.
The robbery involved a coordinated attack in which the victim was physically assaulted and left traumatised.
The perpetrators made away with a pump-action gun, a Huawei phone valued at GH¢1,200, 18 pounds of gold worth around GH¢100,000, and GH¢2,000 in cash.
Investigations revealed that Oppong monitored the victim’s activities and relayed information to the gang, helping plan the raid.
Nyamekye was later linked to the crime after police discovered he had received treatment for gunshot injuries sustained in a failed robbery with other accomplices.
The police urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to assist ongoing investigations.
Authorities stressed that cracking down on violent crimes remains a top priority as the command continues operations to bring all individuals involved to justice.
