BECE candidate killed by overspeeding car

One person has died after a car ran over two Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates at Volo in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region.

The two siblings from Kanuwlou Basic School were knocked down at a camp where they were lodged in preparation for the BECE.

Eyewitnesses said they were meeting their sister who came to visit them at the camp when a speeding vehicle struck them.

One died on the spot while the other is in critical condition.

Confirming the incident, the Volta Regional Director of Education, Francis Agbemadi, expressed sadness over the accident.

“This is a deeply sorrowful moment for the entire community and the education sector,” he said.

Meanwhile, the North Tongu District Chief Executive, Osborne Divine Fenu, pledged the support of the assembly and the government to the family.

“We stand with the family in their grief and will do everything within our power to provide the necessary support and assistance,” Fenu assured.

In 2020, another candidate in the Ahanta West Municipality died during the exam period after a short illness.

The deceased whose name was given as Richard Mensah was a final-year student of the Apowa Methodist Junior High School (JHS) in the Western Region.

According to the school authorities, Mensah fell unconscious a few minutes before the second paper.

They said Mensah complained of a headache when he got to the examination centre but managed to write the Mathematics paper.

The Coordinators of the exams managed to convey him to the nearest private health facility, Jemima Crentsil Hospital in Kwesimintsim but he died on arrival.
