Former Sekondi Member of Parliament, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has expressed confidence that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will secure a decisive victory in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming presidential primaries.
According to Mr Mercer, Dr Bawumia is on course to win more than 65 per cent of the total votes when the party goes to the polls on January 31, 2026, citing what he described as growing grassroots and stakeholder support across the party.
His comments follow the public endorsement of Dr Bawumia by 118 former NPP parliamentary candidates from the 2024 general election, who have thrown their support behind him ahead of the primaries.
Speaking in an interview on Thursday, January 8, 2026, Mr Mercer said he would be shocked if the former Vice President failed to cross the 65 percent threshold.
“I will be very surprised if Dr Bawumia does not get more than 65 per cent of the votes in the primaries,” he said.
He explained that the endorsement by the former parliamentary candidates was the result of a careful assessment of all the aspirants contesting the party’s flagbearership.
“We evaluated what Ghanaians are looking for in a leader at this point, and Dr Bawumia clearly meets and exceeds those expectations,” he added.
Earlier on Thursday, the 118 former NPP parliamentary candidates publicly declared their support for Dr Bawumia ahead of the party’s 2028 presidential race, describing him as the most prepared and electable candidate.
The group said their endorsement was based on Dr Bawumia’s experience, competence, vision, and leadership qualities, insisting that none of the other flagbearer hopefuls matched his credentials.
