Bawumia opens Central Regional tour as NPP 2028 flagbearer race intensifies

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has begun a critical leg of his “Our Journey Together” campaign in the Central Region, a battleground he is expected to prioritise as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) heads towards its 2028 flagbearer primary.

Dr Bawumia, who wrapped up a tour of the Volta Region over the weekend, moved into the Central Region on Monday, November 17, 2025, starting his engagements in the Awutu Senya East Constituency.

He is also scheduled to make stops in Gomoa East, Awutu Senya West and Effutu later in the day, launching a tour that will take him to all 23 constituencies in the region.

The Central Region holds significant strategic value for the former Vice President’s campaign, particularly because it is the home region of one of his strongest contenders, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the former MP for Assin Central. Their rivalry is expected to draw heightened attention as the internal contest builds momentum.

The NPP’s flagbearer primary is scheduled for January 31, 2026, with five aspirants officially in the race.

The candidates are Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, a former General Secretary of the party, Dr Bryan Acheampong, a former Minister of Food and Agriculture and MP for Abetifi, and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, a former Education Minister and MP for Bosomtwe.

Dr Bawumia’s tour aims to consolidate support in a region that historically influences internal party dynamics. Campaign strategists say the Central Region’s delegates are expected to play a decisive role in determining the party’s next flagbearer.

His engagements on the ground are focused on strengthening relationships with delegates, grassroots leaders and opinion shapers, while reinforcing his message of party renewal, unity and forward-looking leadership ahead of the crucial January vote.
