Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party, has donated GH₵200,000 and 1,000 bags of cement to traders affected by the devastating fire that razed several properties at the Adum PZ market in Kumasi on Friday, March 21, 2025.

The tragic incident has left many traders facing substantial losses, amounting to millions of Ghana cedis, and has caused considerable distress among victims.

During his visit to the affected area on March 25, 2025, Dr. Bawumia conveyed his heartfelt sympathy and encouraged private businesses and individuals to volunteer and assist the traders in their recovery efforts.

“I am donating GH₵200,000 and 1,000 bags to the victims, and I urge private individuals to also support the traders in getting their livelihoods back,” he noted.

He emphasised the importance of patience while the Ghana National Fire Service conducts an investigation into the cause of the fire in hopes of preventing similar incidents in the future.

“We have to wait on the investigation by the Ghana National Fire Service, and then we can determine the cause of the fire so that next time, we can prevent it,” he noted.

Dr. Bawumia also called on the government to prioritise the swift completion of the Kejetia Central Market Phase II project, which was reportedly about 80% finished when the previous NPP administration was in office.

“We believe that when it is completed, it will greatly benefit the traders here,” he said.

He also commended the firefighters for their quick response to the situation, acknowledging reports regarding the hospitalization of two firefighters.

“I heard about two fire personnel who have been admitted to the hospital. We wish them a speedy recovery,” he stated.

Accompanying Dr. Bawumia were NPP Regional Chairman Bernard Boasiako, better known as Chairman Wontumi, along with other party officials.
