Bawumia can still lead NPP to victory – Oppong Nkrumah

Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has described former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) strongest option going forward, arguing that his performance in the 2024 general election positions him well for a future comeback.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah urged party supporters to look beyond defeat and focus on historical lessons within the NPP.

He drew comparisons between Dr. Bawumia’s political journey and that of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who also faced scepticism after losing his first presidential contest.

According to him, doubts about Dr. Bawumia’s electability mirror the uncertainty that once surrounded Mr Kufuor.

Despite losing his initial bid, Mr Kufuor later returned as flagbearer, won convincingly and went on to lead the country for two terms, leaving behind a legacy many within the party still admire.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah argued that Dr. Bawumia’s showing in the 2024 elections was, in fact, stronger than Mr Kufuor’s first attempt, even though the party faced economic pressures and political fatigue after years in government.

He believes this context makes Dr. Bawumia’s performance more significant than critics are willing to admit.

The lawmaker dismissed claims that the former Vice President cannot lead the party to victory, insisting that such arguments ignore both history and current realities within the NPP.

He stressed that party unity, renewed grassroots energy and better organisation could change electoral fortunes.

“Bawumia even performed better than Kufuor in his first election, and given the difficult circumstances we faced in 2024, that shows he remains a formidable candidate who can lead the party back to victory,” he said.
