Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central and a key member of the Appointments Committee, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has condemned activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor over his claims that ministerial nominees were offering bribes to the committee members for favourable endorsements.
Mr. Barker-Vormawor, through his lawyer Nana Ato-Dadzie, issued an apology to the committee for his wild and unsubstantiated allegations when he appeared before them today, Wednesday, January 29.
However, Mr. Boamah rejected the apology, arguing that it was merely an afterthought and did not absolve him of responsibility.
According to Mr. Boamah, such serious accusations could not be brushed aside with a mere apology, and Barker-Vormawor should be held accountable for his remarks.
He insisted that the activist should face the consequences of his actions to deter others from making baseless allegations that tarnish the reputation of public institutions.
The controversy has sparked a wider debate on the credibility of Ghana’s political appointment process and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their statements in the public domain.
Similarly, a member of the Appointments Committee and Minority Chief Whip, Annor Dompreh, lashed out at Barker-Vormawor over his actions.
Mr. Dompreh insisted that Barker-Vormawor should take full responsibility for his claims instead of offering what he described as a lame apology.
According to him, making such serious accusations against a parliamentary committee without evidence was highly irresponsible and damaged the credibility of the institution.
