Barker-Vormawor granted GH¢20K bail after fourth attempt

Convener of the pressure group, Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has been granted a GH¢20,000 bail with two sureties.

He was granted bail today [Wednesday, October 16] after his previous bail applications were denied by the Accra Circuit Court and the High Court.

The High Court judge denied him bail at the time because he was concerned that Barker-Vormawor would commit another offence if freed, as he was already on bail for treason felony charges.

He has since been charged with counts of stealing, unlawful assembly, unlawful damage, assault on a public officer and offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace.

His legal team, however, applied for bail again and succeeded.

Meanwhile, he is expected to report to the police twice a week.

Barker-Vormawor was taken into custody on Monday, September 23, 2024, for his involvement in unlawful acts during the Democracy Hub’s demonstration against illegal mining on September 21-22.

Prior to his arrest, the Ghana Police Service had declared a manhunt for him, urging the public to provide any information that could lead to his capture.

However, he refuted the police’s claim of a manhunt, stating that he was not in hiding and had been available for questioning.

He criticised the police’s approach, asserting that their actions were an attempt to intimidate and silence activists.
