Bank of Ghana outlines activities for Cedi@60 anniversary

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced a year-long series of activities to mark the 60th anniversary of the cedi, which falls on July 19, 2025.

The celebrations will kick off in August with an official launch event at the Accra International Conference Centre.

Themed “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience,” the event will set the tone for months of national reflection and engagement.

As part of the celebrations, the BoG will collaborate with the National Museum of Science and Technology to host exhibitions that highlight the cedi’s history, supported by mobile museum showcases across the country.

There will also be stakeholder engagements focused on public education around currency handling, the cedi’s life cycle, and its security features, under themes such as “Keep the Cedi Clean,” “Currency Process,” and “Know the Cedi.”

In September, the Bank will roll out community outreach programs and roadshows dubbed Cedi Week, aimed at fostering public dialogue on the role of the cedi in everyday life.

October will feature CediFest, an initiative focused on students through campus engagements and essay competitions centred on the currency’s significance and impact.

The main commemorative event for Cedi@60 will take place in November at the Accra International Conference Centre, in collaboration with the Bank’s Currency Research Department.

The year-long celebration will conclude in December with a national Thanksgiving Service.

According to the Bank of Ghana, the Cedi@60 celebration will not only honour the legacy of Ghana’s national currency but also reinforce its role in economic resilience, financial literacy, and national identity.
