The Bagre Dam will be spilt on August 19, 2024, the Water Resources Commission has announced.
In a statement dated August 16, the commission’s White Volta Secretariat said the Power Utility of Burkina Faso, SONABEL, informed them that the water levels in the dam have been steadily rising since Friday, August 2, 2024.
“Update from SONABEL this afternoon [Friday afternoon] indicates that the upstream level of the Bagre Dam is 232.82m and rising. Consequently, SONABEL will commence the spillage of water from the Bagre Dam by Monday, August 19, 2024,” it said.
The spillage may cause the White Volta River to overflow its banks and occupy its flood plains.
The commission has, therefore, advised residents along the river to take precautionary measures to avoid any adverse impact of the spillage.

“This is to inform you for your further action relating to the flood management. We will furnish you with additional information on this matter as this becomes available to us,” the commission added.
The spillage of the Bagre Dam takes place either in August or September every year, to prevent destruction to the dam.
This exercise results in flooding in low-lying communities in Burkina Faso and Ghana.
About 35 communities along the White Volta in the Bawku Municipality, Bawku West, Garu, Binduri, Nabdam and Talensi districts are the hardest-hit areas.
