Burkina Faso begins spillage of Bagre Dam

Authorities in Burkina Faso have started releasing water from the Bagre and Kompienga Dams, prompting urgent warnings about potential flooding in parts of Ghana.

The release was officially communicated by SONABEL, Burkina Faso’s national electricity company, to the Upper East Regional office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The water spillage flows into the White and Black Volta Rivers, both of which run downstream into northern Ghana.

The current water level at the Bagre Dam stands at 233.99 meters, which is 86.38 percent of its full capacity. The Kompienga Dam is also nearing its threshold, with water levels measured at 177.66 meters.

According to officials, the effects of the spillage could be felt in Ghana within the next 48 hours.

Communities living along the riverbanks are being advised to prepare for possible flooding, especially those in low-lying areas.

Farmers and residents are being urged to take precautionary measures to protect lives, livestock, and crops.

NADMO is coordinating with local leaders and community groups to monitor the situation closely and provide assistance where needed.
