Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has publicly reprimanded Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, the Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, following a tense exchange during proceedings over the ongoing nurses’ strike.
However, the Speaker stopped short of referring the matter to the Privileges Committee for disciplinary action.
The incident unfolded on June 10, 2025, when Dr. Afriyie, who serves as the Ranking Member on the Health Committee, attempted to make an urgent statement about the strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association.
The industrial action, which began on June 4, has significantly disrupted healthcare delivery nationwide.
Dr. Afriyie’s attempt was blocked by First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor, who cited procedural issues.
The MP continued pressing the matter, prompting Ahiafor to order his removal from the chamber, a decision that sparked vocal protests from Minority MPs.
Addressing Parliament the next day, Speaker Bagbin expressed concern about the nurses’ strike but criticised Dr. Afriyie for failing to use the appropriate parliamentary channels.
“Urgent statements must go through proper procedures,” Bagbin reminded the House.
“The title ‘Honourable’ is not just for show. It comes with responsibilities, including respect for leadership and rules.”
Despite the stern words, Bagbin chose not to escalate the matter to the Privileges Committee, opting instead for a cautionary approach.
His handling appears aimed at defusing tensions while reinforcing decorum in Parliament.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin pledged his side’s cooperation, calling for unity to resolve the healthcare crisis.
