Bagbin erred, Maamle and Asante are still NPP members—Afenyo-Markin

The leader of the NPP Caucus, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has emphatically stated that the legislators for Agona West and Suhum, Cynthia Morrison, and Kwadjo Asante, respectively, are still members of the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP).

According to the MP for Effutu Constituency, the two legislators have not officially informed him, as the party leader in the chamber, of their intent to resign from the party, nor have they notified the party’s leadership of their separation from the NPP.

He added that they have only expressed their intent to go as independent candidates in the 2024 general election.

Mr Afenyo-Markin made this statement during a press conference today, October 18, 2024, barely a day after the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, declared the seats of the aforementioned MPs vacant.

Therefore, he considers the Speaker’s ruling to kick the MPs out of Parliament erroneous.

“First of all, let’s put the issue in context. My members that are going independent, i.e. the MP for Suhum and the MP for Agona West, have not applied to me to say that they are no more part of the caucus.

“Two, the party has not taken any action to dismiss them from the party, neither have they written to resign from the party.

“They have only expressed their intent to participate in the next election as independent candidates.

“As it is today, as a matter of fact, their status as members of parliament on the ticket of the NPP remains the same. It hasn’t changed,” he noted.

Mr Afenyo-Markin further explained that the independent candidate in the chamber, Andrew Asiamah of Fomena, who applied to join the NPP remains the same as he is regarded as a member of the party.

“The independent candidate who applied to join the NPP has not changed his stand. So nothing has changed as to how the composition of Parliament is today.

“Indeed, I’m in touch with Honourable Amoako Asiamah, and in fact, I’m happy to announce to you that he is also filing a separate action as a result of the conduct of the Speaker. So you will surely see an action filed by him,” he added.

Meanwhile, the NPP legislators are of the view that until the Supreme Court decides on the case, they are not returning to the chamber to continue with government business.
