Ayine’s press conference a knee-jerk reaction to public criticism – Godfred Dame

Former Attorney-General Godfred Dame has criticised the press conference by Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine, calling it a rushed and reactive effort to rationalise the discontinuation of criminal cases against former officials of the NDC government.

Mr. Dame alleged that the Mahama administration is attempting to absolve former appointees of their criminal actions by halting ongoing legal proceedings against them.

“I deem the press conference hurriedly assembled by the Attorney-General, Dr Dominic Ayine, as a knee-jerk reaction to genuine concerns raised by well-meaning Ghanaians on the attempt by the NDC government to whitewash the crimes of persons who served in the NDC government,” he stated.

During a press briefing on February 14, 2025, the former Justice Minister went on to accuse the current government of intentionally employing strategies to grant indefinite immunity to its affiliates, effectively shielding them from accountability for wrongdoing against the state.

“The President, through his Attorney-General, has in a spectacular fashion, become the clearing agent to indemnify their allies who have duly been put before the courts for commission of crimes,” he added.

Godfred Dame believes that the stance taken by the Attorney-General threatens Ghana’s democratic principles and governance, suggesting that it conveys a troubling message: that political allegiance takes precedence over responsibility.

Nonetheless, he remains optimistic that Ghanaians will recognize the underlying motives behind these actions, emphasizing that public vigilance and criticism will persist.

“I am, however, reassured by the fact that Ghanaians are discerning enough to discover the illegitimate motives for the discontinuance of the cases in question,” he concluded.
