Avail yourself to be counted – Mahama charges Ghanaians

Former President John Mahama has urged Ghanaians to avail themselves of the 2021 National Population and Housing Census.

The former president is part of a national sensitization campaign launched by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) ahead of the census.

He was counted on Monday, June 28, 2021.

Addressing the press after the exercise, the former President explained that the data generated from the census would serve as vital statistics to guide national development.

“It is necessary to know how many people live in your country accurately so you can make better provisions in terms of social amenities, in terms of how the economy is managed, and in terms of how development is spread so that everybody gets a fair share of the national cake,” he stated.

Mahama noted that the census data would help the government consider creating new districts and restructure the local government system.

He urged Ghanaians to open their doors and welcome the enumerators when they come to conduct the census.

“Please, when the census officers get to your house, welcome them and answer the very simple questions and let’s have a perfect count,” he noted.

Chief Census Methodologist Owusu Kagya ensured that the law mandates and requires that all information collected be kept confidential and solely for census purposes.

The GSS is mandated by law to conduct a headcount in Ghana every 10 years, which would provide the government and researchers insight into the population dynamics to make proper development projections.

According to GSS, the country benefits enormously because it would guide development plans, implement policies and programmes, monitor, evaluate, and report.
