Authorities to reopen cinemas after COVID-19 infection nosedive
President Akufo-Addo has disclosed that the Ghana Health Service and the Ghana Tourism Authority will announce modalities for the reopening of cinemas in the coming weeks.
The modalities, the president said, were necessary for ensuring movie lovers’ health and safety and the protection of the industry.
Operators of cinemas are expected to comply with the proposed protocols.
“In a move towards the reopening of cinemas and theatres, the government has engaged cinema owners and operators on a set of protocols and guidelines that need to be put in place and implemented by all operators before the eventual re-opening.
“They will work with the operators on a set of directives that will ensure the health and safety of all patrons and staff in all the facilities involved,” President Akufo-Addo said in his address on Sunday, May 16.
Sunday’s announcement comes after several assurances to filmmakers that government would consider reopening cinemas in the wake of the COVID-19 induced restrictions.
Ghana introduced restriction measures in March 2020 after the country confirmed its first COVID-19 case.
Since then, beaches, nightclubs, pubs remain shut.
