August 4 not a public holiday – Interior Ministry
The Ministry of the Interior has announced that Monday, August 4, 2025, is not a public holiday.
In a statement released on July 31, the Ministry, clarified that commemorative days do not fall under the category of public holidays and thus do not justify a cessation of work or public activities.
August 4 was previously designated as Founder’s Day, commemorating the founding of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), which played a significant role in Ghana’s quest for independence.
However, this designation has been reassessed following recent legislative updates.
It will be recalled that in June 2025, Parliament approved a new bill that reinstated September 21 as Founders’ Day, honouring the birthday of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, as a national holiday in celebration of the country’s independence struggle.
The Ministry of the Interior is encouraging the public and organisations to take note of this change and make the necessary arrangements, as August 4 will proceed as a typical working day.
