Assin North MP perjury case adjourned again

Source The Ghana Report

The perjury case involving Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayeson has been adjourned to 29 March 2022 by the Accra High Court.

This was due to the inability of the prosecution team to serve disclosures on the legislator.

The embattled legislator is facing charges including forgery and perjury.

He is also accused of deceiving a public officer and knowingly making a false declaration.

On Tuesday, 15 March, the prosecution team informed the court that the said disclosures, including all witness statements, had been filed.

However, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Yvonne Atakorah Obuobisa, explained that “one of the witnesses was out of the jurisdiction”.

She also mentioned that the team do not have the service address of the MP’s lawyer, Tsatsu Tsikata, and thus could not serve the letter attached to the disclosure documents.

The DPP thus requested Mr Tsikata’s address for the service, or in the alternative, that he be served in court.

Mr Tsikata, however, opted to provide the address.

Justice Mary Maame Ekua Nsenkyire asked that the address be filed at the registry for the sake of subsequent processes.

The trial judge subsequently adjourned the case since the court doesn’t even have the said processes filed by the prosecution.

The legislator was charged with criminal summons following his alleged dual citizenship status when he contested the December 2020 parliamentary elections.

He was slapped with five counts of forgery of passport or travel certificate, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury and false declaration for office.

It is the case of the A-G that Mr Quayson allegedly made a false statement to the Passport Office that he did not hold a passport to another country when he applied for a Ghanaian Passport.

Mr Quayson is also said to have made a false declaration to the Electoral Commission (EC) to the effect that he (Quayson) did not owe any allegiance to a foreign country when he filed to contest as a candidate for the Assin North seat.
