An Accra High Court has once again dismissed the latest application filed by Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson in his criminal trial.
The new motion sought to halt proceedings on the grounds that other applications had been filed before the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.
The MP’s legal team contends that until a determination has been made regarding the appeal challenging the High Court’s decision to hear the case on a day-to-day basis, the main trial should be put on hold.
But the trial judge Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh, dismissed the motion on Tuesday, July 18.
The court ruled that nothing stopped it from proceeding with the case despite multiple legal processes filed at the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.
The trial judge stated that in the absence of any court order halting proceedings, the court would proceed with the case.
Following the dismissal of the motion, the first prosecution witness Richard Takyi-Mensah mounted the box for further cross-examination to continue.
Mr Quayson is before the court on five charges — deceit of a public officer, forgery of a passport or travel certificate, knowingly making a false statement, perjury, and false declaration for office.
He has pleaded not guilty and is currently on bail.
